About Us

North Star Metal Exchange is run by two brothers, Deven O'Dell and Dylan Richey. No corporate parent, no commissioned sales staff — just the two of us, a scale, and a spot chart.

How We Got Here

We grew up around the Minnesota coin and bullion trade — sorting inventory at estate sales as kids, working shop counters through college, and eventually running buying desks for other people's businesses. Between the two of us, that's a couple decades of testing metal, reading spot charts, and learning what a fair offer actually looks like.

Eventually we started asking why the model had to look the way it always had: a retail storefront on a busy corner, rent, staff, security glass, overhead that has to get paid somehow — and it gets paid out of the price offered to the person walking through the door with grandma's ring.

So we went appointment-only. No storefront means no storefront overhead, which means more of what your metal is worth ends up in your hand instead of covering our rent. It also means every appointment is private — one seller, two brothers, no one else at the table.

On Pricing

We start every offer from the live spot price — the same number you can pull up on your phone before you ever call us. From there we walk you through the purity, the weight, and the margin we're applying, out loud, at the table. If a number doesn't make sense to you, ask us to explain it again. We will.

We're not going to pretend we're a charity — we buy at a margin below spot, like every dealer does, because that's the business. What we won't do is hide how we got to your number.
